Bill Nye Has Changed His Tune About The Safety Of GMOs

Call it Bill Nye’s big about-face.

While the “Science Guy” has been a staunch defender of climate change research and the theory of evolution, he’s long been a bit of a skeptic when it comes to the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) — despite the fact that 88 percent of scientists believe they’re safe.

But now, following a visit to St. Louis-based agricultural company Monsanto, Bill Nye appears to have changed his mind. In a backstage interview following an appearance on Bill Maher’s HBO show (see above), Nye hinted at plans to rewrite a chapter of his new book “Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation.”

“There’s a chapter in there which I’m going to revise,” Nye says in the video, “It’s about genetically modified food. I went to Monsanto and I spent a lot of time with the scientists there and I have revised my outlook and I’m very excited about telling the world. When you’re in love you want to tell the world.”

In the chapter he’s referring to, entitled “Genetically Modified Foods–What The GMF?” Nye wrote:

“Genetically engineering food is controversial, as it should be. If you’re asking me, we should stop introducing genes from one species into another… Although we can know exactly what happens to any organism we modify, we just can’t know what will happen to other species in that modified species’ ecosystem.”

Nye hopes the changes will come out in the Fall. Stay tuned!
