Roger Clemens Defamation Lawsuit Ends With Settlement

NEW YORK (AP) — Attorneys say they’ve settled a long-running defamation lawsuit against former Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens by his ex-trainer.

The lawyers and ex-trainer Brian McNamee appeared before a U.S. magistrate judge Wednesday in Brooklyn. They haven’t disclosed the settlement amount. Clemens didn’t attend.

Clemens attorney Chip Babcock says the seven-time Cy Young Award winner won’t contribute any money to the settlement.

Insurance company AIG will pay. A spokesman has declined to comment.

McNamee sued Clemens for defamation in 2008 after the pitcher said McNamee lied and manufactured evidence when he accused Clemens of using banned performance-enhancing drugs.

McNamee attorney Richard Emery says the deal allows everyone to move on. McNamee says he’s still digesting the agreement.

Clemens also pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Houston Astros.
