On the Loose: Primetime Intolerance

The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), the self-regulatory body for entertainment channels in India, has issued a notice to Star World for airing objectionable content. The ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) complained of a scene that was “indecent and vulgar”. Grey’s Anatomy’s 12th season has a powerful storyline about a gay teen couple, a Christian and a Muslim, who attempt suicide and survive. There is a deeply complex context to the scene that has so offended the BCCC. Incidentally, in a positive sign that audiences are maturing, complaints of intimacy on screen, always a prime target for television censors have seen a remarkable decline.
