After more than two years locked in combat, South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has appointed his arch-rival Riek Machar as vice-president, the post he held from 2005-2013 before being sacked. United Nations experts said in January that Kiir and Machar are both responsible for most of the violence committed during the war, now in its third year despite an August 2015 peace deal. Both are former rebel leaders who rose to power during Sudan's 1983-2005 civil war between north and south, after which South Sudan seceded in 2011 to form the world's youngest country.
